"To be or not to be -- that is the question"
We all know who wrote this famous quote. We are taught in schools, through theater productions, and through movies that this is the work of William Shakespeare. Many people don’t know exactly how he is important, mostly because people don’t do the research to find some of the ways Shakespeare has shaped our world: through language, characters, and familiar situations. It may be a surprise that one man could add so much to the English language, as Shakespeare created or fused together over a thousand words, many of which are commonly used today. Another way the playwright impacted us is through his very relatable characters. Juliet, for example, is a love-struck teenager who readily gives her heart and soul to a boy she has only just met, which many modern young women can utterly relate to. Yet a third way that Shakespeare’s works are important to us today is the circumstances in his plays that are realistic and again, relatable. In a midsummer Night’s Dream, there is a very complicated love triangle, which many people experience to this day and therefore understand and have sympathy for while experiencing the story. Another way these situations influence modern literature and stories is that they inspire popular movies such as The Lion King, which is heavily tied to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. If anybody believes Shakespeare is boring, unimportant, or a forgotten old man, then there are scores of examples and evidences to prove otherwise.
